"We married about six months after graduating high school, but long before that, we knew the next step was getting married," says Rusty Belcher of his relationship with his wife of 32 years, Suzanne, whom he first met at church camp in junior high. That unity served them well, explains Suzanne, when they faced a trying time: "Long ago, while we were undergoing fertility treatment, Rusty also took a big pay cut to enter an apprenticeship program at the shipyard. So much uncertainty at the same time was hard, but we made the decision together and it ended up being the right one for us."

"Being an interfaith couple can be hard," says Jodi Benway, who met her husband Alan in history class his senior year, her junior year. "I'm Jewish and he's Catholic and on paper, we really don't belong together." Kids brought the issue to the surface, she explains: "When they were babies, I was more concerned with what was going to make our parents happy. But then as they got older the question became, 'How are we going to educate them?'"

The Benways, who have been married 25 years, have learned a lot about communicating over the years. "Don't make your partner guess," says Jodi. "I know a lot of women who say, 'If he loved me, he would know what I want' and I'm like, 'No, he would know what you want if you told him!'

Kate and Brian Glodney, who met in 7th grade in Los Angeles, didn't connect until senior prom. "We went with different people — both just friends — but we kissed at the after-party, which was weird because we never really paid much attention to each other," Kate recalls. "Brian seemed so quiet, and I was sonotquiet." And Brian had always seen her as unattainable: "Kate was the larger-than-life beautiful girl next door, the popular girl in class, and I'd always thought,If only..." Still, it took their 10-year reunion for Brian to ask her out — and the rest is history.

Jordi Lippe lost touch with childhood friend Ross McGraw when her family moved away after 4th grade. "But senior year, a friend invited me back to Pennsylvania for a party — and Ross was there," Jordi recalls. "Then my date ended up dumping me right before prom and Ross took me. The rest is history!" Jorid's dad, a pilot, flew them back-and-forth to see each other, she adds. "Then we did long distance during college. It was worth it."

When Jordi Lippe's father died, she says, "I remember thinking,I understand why someone would want to walk away from this. Why would he want to stay with someone who is crying all the time, who is miserable, whose family is miserable, where the whole environment is just tragic? It's a lot to take in. He not only stood by me, but also rose to the occasion."

James Pegg asked his now-wife Leslie to their homecoming dance shortly after the 16-year-olds met at a carnival. "But I was in a bad car accident two days later, so he took me in a wheelchair," says Leslie. "Then he was the person I thought of to motivate me to get better." And James says he fell in love with Leslie during visits as she was recovering: "I got to talk to her and see what a beautiful person she was beyond her appearance. She didn't complain one time. That's what drew me to her, her optimism and strength."
