Exclusive: Get Amal Clooney's Wavy Bob From The Venice Film Festival
Amal Clooney and her husband George just hit the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival looking exactly as you'd imagine: perfect, glossy, and angelic. Amal's hair, however, was quite unexpected. The short, wavy bob is faux (no chop here), but it's a departure from her preference for long, glossy waves. Ahead, Clooney's hairstylist Rod Ortega gave us the exclusive rundown on exactly how he got the "1940s Italian glamour"-inspired look using T3 tools and some expert pinning.
Get Her Look
"Starting with wet hair, I combed-in two pumps of theRene Furterer Karite Leave in Nourishing Creamfrom the mid-sections to the ends to really protect the ends," says Ortega. He then used theIbiza Hair paddle brushto distribute the cream evenly through her hair. Before blow-drying, Ortega blotted her hair to get rid of excess moisture. "This is a very important pre-blow dry step," he notes.
Using theT3 Featherweight Luxe 2i dryerand the2.5” Ibiza Hair round brush, he started blowing-out her hair starting in the back "and then making my way all the way to the front, really smoothing each section as I went." Once dry, he reached for theT3 Voluminous Hair Curling Iron (1.5”). "I started with the vertical sections around the face, from the ear to the top of the head, and then pinned each curl as I went," he says. "Once I got to the back section, I used bigger sections to curl because I wanted more of a loose wave. I pinned these up as well."
Once Amal's hair was pinned and cooled, Ortega "lightly spritzed" it all withRene Furterer Vegetal Styling Strong Hold Finishing Hairspray. He then unpinned all of the back curls, brushed out the waves, and then backcombed them. "Next, I took a chignon form and cut it in half. Using the half, I took it to the ends of the hair and rolled it up to the head, pinning it underneath," he explains. "I released the front section, brushed it out, backcombed it and tucked it underneath, pinning it to the chignon form."
To finish the look, he pinned the hair back behind the ear on one side and used a light spritz of hairspray—molding and working hair into the final wavy, bubbly shape.
HB: What was the conversation like when you were deciding on the look?
RO:"No matter what the look, there is always a lot of open conversation about what we want it to be like. We think about the fashion side of things—what the dress looks like, what the inspiration is and then explore from there. We are never locked down on one look. We try one thing and then build upon it and try a variation of different looks until we all agree on something."
HB: Amal's hair is literally nevernotshiny, bouncy, and perfect. How can us non-Amals get hair like that too?
RO:"It all starts with a great shampoo, a great conditioner and really great tools. I used theT3 Voluminous Curls Ironon every single one of the looks I’ve created in Venice. The T3 tools’ technology locks in moisture and leaves the hair shiny and smooth."
HB: Amal mostly wears her hair down for events, or swept over to one side. But this look is quite different—why the change?
RO:"This look is different from her usual side-swept waves.
