Teen Battling Cancer Is Killed Days Before Receiving His Make-A-Wish Gift
TheSan Antonio Express-Newsreports that a Texas teen battling bone cancer was shot and killed just days before his Make-A-Wish dream was set to become a reality.
Diego Rodriguez, 17, was fatally shot on Tuesday after attempting to take a gun away from a 15-year-old boy who was playing with it. The younger boy fled the scene but was later apprehended.
Rodriguez had been fighting bone cancer for two years and his one wish was to have his grandfather's old Chevy truck redone. His mother promised him that if he kept fighting the cancer and made it to his 16th birthday, they would get the work done and he could have the truck.
Make-A-Wish teamed up with Black Jack Speed Shop — owned by NBA All-Star, Tim Duncan — to grant the family's wish.
"I was excited to bring some joy to a young man who was down for the better part of his earlier years," co-owner Jason Pena toldInside Edition.
The unveiling of the spruced up Chevy was supposed to happen just shortly before Rodriguez's death.
Police say the shooting is an ongoing investigation and charges are pending.
