After suffering a brain hemorrhage, the woman was taken to Milan's San Raffaele hospital, where doctors were unable to save her. At just 23 weeks pregnant, the woman's family and physicians agreed to keep her on life support in order to save the unborn baby. Her breathing and blood flow were controlled by equipment, and nutrients were fed to the fetus through a tube in her intestines.

On December 18, after two months of life support, the woman was 32 weeks pregnant, and her doctors determined this was enough time for the baby to survive outside the womb. The healthy child was born weighing 3.9 pounds. The woman's family gave her doctors permission to take her off of life support and remove her organs for donation right after the birth.
